What Made Rick Run?

Rick Metcalfe was a third-generation San Diegan. As a child, he remembered growing up seeing horses and cows on the hill where he lived in El Cajon – much different than what the city looks like today. As a young man, his mom, Marilyn, said he focused on just two things: doing whatever he did better than anyone else and making money.

Richard Metcalfe

By the age of 25, he was the owner of a major construction company. Later, he became one of the leading salespeople for the New York Life Insurance Company. In 1996, he fulfilled his dream of doing something good for others by creating Asset Marketing Systems (AMS). He had a keen business sense and found inspiration in his role model, Bill Gates. His goal was to build a first class company. He did just that by earning people's respect everyday. Along the way, he became a nationally recognized entrepreneur and turned AMS into the "Microsoft" of the financial services industry.

Rick was a visionary who led by example. He worked incredible hours building AMS, while maintaining his personal production – he was always the company's #1 annuity salesperson. His business philosophy was very simple – Good is Not Good Enough. He pushed everyone, including himself, to be the best they could be. Part of Rick's legacy is the vibrant company he has left behind.

The other part of his legacy is the family he has left behind. Rick had four children, Jennifer, Ricky, Kurt, and Kyle who loved him dearly. He would do anything for his kids and spent all of his free time with them. When Rick died, he was on the Colorado River doing what he loved most – spending time with his family and friends.

While Rick is no longer with us physically, he will always be with us spiritually. And, on those days when life gets a little rocky, we just ask ourselves, "What Would Rick Have Done?" because that's what made Rick run.

Love Always,
